Board of Directors
Family Shelter is governed by a volunteer board of directors. The Board of Directors is the active legal body of the Family Shelter. Board members serve for a three-year term. Elected board members may serve two consecutive terms and are not eligible for Board membership again until they have been off the Board for at least one year. Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings, serve on at least one committee, advocate on behalf of homeless families and their issues. Board members are expected to make some sort of financial commitment. The basic functions of the Board of Directors are to:
- Be responsible for the implementation of organizational policies.
- Determine budgets and provide funds.
- Conduct periodical evaluations of the Family Shelter’s operation and maintain standards of operations as recommended by the Family Shelter.
- Be responsible for the employment and termination of the Executive Director and to prescribe his/her duties.
- Approve compensation for all staff.
- Be an advocate of and spokesperson for the Family Shelter and its program to the community.
- Participate if possible in the activities of the Family Shelter such as Area Councils, Board Members Conferences, and National Conferences.
- Serve as a resource for the Family Shelter facility and program needs.
- Help generate needed funds for the operation of the Family Shelter.
